About Us

The Ontario Lyme Alliance was formed by a group of advocates in 2013 with the goal of improving the way Lyme disease is treated, tested, and diagnosed in Ontario. We contracted the help of a firm recognized as experts in healthcare and government relations in order to achieve this goal. With their assistance, we have been able to meet with various provincial medical associations, politicians and also representatives of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. We have also met with the Ontario Medical Association, the Association of Local Public Health Agencies, the Ontario College of Family Physicians, and others.

At each of these meetings, we have discussed our concerns about the diagnosis, testing, and treatment of Lyme disease in Ontario and presented information on current research findings. We are pleased to say that as a result of our meetings there has been increased support for the creation of a provincial strategy to address Lyme disease in Ontario.

On Thursday, November 27th of 2014, Mr. Michael Mantha (MPP for Manitoulin-Algoma) tabled a motion in the Ontario Legislative Assembly which asked that the Minister of Health develop a provincial strategy for Lyme disease. The motion was read, debated and then carried unanimously by all three political parties on first reading. The transcript of the reading of the motion and the debate that followed can be found here.

However, the motion only applies for a one-year period. This means that the strategy must be completed before November 27th, 2015. We therefore require the help of Ontarian citizens and organizations to write to the Minister of Health to ask that priority be given to the government's commitment to create a provincial strategy on Lyme disease. If you are a member of an organization that would like to write a letter of support to the Minister, please do not hesitate to contact us for more information.
